About First Descents
First Descents (FD) is a nonprofit organization that provides life-changing outdoor adventures for young adults impacted by cancer and multiple sclerosis.
Founded by visionary kayaker Brad Ludden in 2001, he believed that kayaking and adventure sports could help participants build a sense of accomplishment, self-confidence, and a fun, supportive community.
Today, First Descents partners with outfitters across the country to offer multiday, all-inclusive outdoor adventures—free for participants. These trips take place in wild, beautiful locations with comfortable lodging, gourmet chefs, and, of course, the daily challenge of Rock Climbing, Surfing, or Whitewater Kayaking—led by a professional outdoor school.
A Legacy of Impact
For over two decades, FD has been a leader in the young adult oncology movement, with hundreds of adventure programs to date, impacting many thousands of participants nationwide. In 2018, FD expanded its oncology-focused mission to implement new programs serving young adults impacted by multiple sclerosis.
The Power of Outdoor Challenge and Connection
Through skills development, community, and outdoor adventure in a scenic location, First Descents invites participants to experience the challenge of outdoor adventure, to climb, surf, and kayak beyond their diagnosis, reclaim their lives, and connect with others who are doing the same.
Our Partnership with First Descents
Sundance Kayak School is a proud partner with First Descents. Since our first program in 2013, we’ve been able to teach hundreds of FD participants and staff how to whitewater kayak on the Rogue River in Oregon. These programs have been some of the most rewarding we’ve ever been a part of.
2025 Sundance FD Program Highlights
In 2025, we will be running seven FD kayaking programs as well as two all-inclusive Sundance offerings for FD Alumni, including:
Who Can Participate?

Contributing to FD’s Mission
If you would like to contribute to the First Descents mission, you can join Team FD’s fundraising opportunities, including racing the Leadville 100 MBT or Trail Run race series or running the TCS NYC Marathon. They also accept donations throughout the year.
OUT LIVING IT
FD’s Motto “Out Living it,” is a reference to getting out there to live your life, test your limits, and reclaim your physical and mental health.
Studies have shown that participating in FD’s programs can result in an increase in self-esteem, body image and the ability to cope with cancer and it’s ongoing effects. Additionally, reports of moderate to severe depression and anxiety (as measured by the PHQ-4) marked a 60% decrease for FD participants.
